Week 7 Movsessian “Gardyloo”
Gardyloo (Interjection) - used by people in medieval Scotland to warn passerby‘s of waste about to be thrown from a window into the street below. The term was still in use as late as 1930s and 1940s when many people had no indoor toilets.
“Then the people would throw it out the window and yell gardyloo. We take toilets for granted sometimes.”
This word came up while I was looking for information for history homework. At first I was so confused because I had zero clue what it meant but then when I looked it up I actually laughed. It’s a very FUNNY word in my opinion. The thought of hearing someone yell through a window while I’m walking down the street and then knowing that waste could be thrown down at me is very very interesting thought to think.
